Vietnamese Spring Festival and Parade

  • Nov 2007: Voted on a float theme: One UVSA Car followed by a trail of bikes (2 bikes per school; 2 people per bike)

    • Deadline will be on Feb 1st. 2008
    • Need each school to ask members if they want to participate in riding a two-seat bicycle
    • Outfits: Females: Ao dai | Males: black pants and white button-up shirt
    • Need a rat costume
    • Need a silver or black car

Details

General Formation

  1. UVSA Banner
    1. Three carriers
  2. Mazda Mouse
    1. Christian’s beige RSX, fallback on Tam’s Silver Nissan, fallback on Cong’s dark gray Tahoe.
    2. Decorations include nose, eyes, ears, and tail
      1. Installation pipes for tail, covered in pink or brown
      2. Styrofoam for nose covered in cellophane
      3. Wooden dowels as whiskers
      4. Suggest eyes
      5. Ear made out of wire and fabric
    3. Decorations will be made on Friday and Saturday before the parade at Cong’s house in San Jose.
  3. Bicycle Couples
    1. One girl and one guy from each school (8 schools total).
    2. The couples are arranged into two columns.
    3. Girl is wearing áo trắng and holding nón lá.
    4. The nón lá is decorated with school colors, letters, or logo.
    5. Guy is wearing black slacks and white dress shirt, holding a classic looking bookbag. He will be carrying the bicycle. It would be preferable to have bicycle bells.
    6. Deadline for names of participants and hat design is February 1, 2008.
  4. Extra people can walk in formation behind the bikes.

Rainy Day Contingency Plans

  1. Umbrellas to be purchased a few days before parade and check weather forecast, probably from Walmart and Gap Kids.
  2. Priority of colors for umbrella
    1. Clear
    2. Green and gold
    3. School colors
    4. White or black
  3. Ponchos
    1. Colored preferred, or else clear.

Other Things

  1. Check to see if schools will have their own nón lá. Get nón lá from Sacramento if school doesn’t have one.
  2. Deadline for headcount: February 8, 2008.
  3. Cong and Priscilla point of contact on the day of.
  4. Bao will take care of inventory check-outs.
  5. Consider having candy to pass out.

Day-of Schedule

The floats and units staging area is going to be across the street from the San Pedro Square Parking Garage located at: 45 N Market St, San Jose, CA 95113

Parking is free at the San Pedro Square Parking Garade and along W St James Street (see http://www.sjdowntownparking.com/parking_map.php)

The initial schedule is as follows:

  • 9:00AM Streets will be closed off; if you want parking around San Pedro Square area, come here before then. Check-ins will begin.
  • 10:00AM Check-ins should be finished. No Vietnamese-time people!
  • 11:00AM Parade begins. UVSA’s unit will be near the front of the parade and be done earlier. If your VSA does not have an individual unit (which will be located near the rear of the parade), you get to be a spectator, or just come chill with us at the staging area.
  • ~2:00PM Parade ends.
  • ~6:30PM Carpool up to CSUEB for their Bella Luna dance (aka Tet Afterparty!!). Guestlist required. Please email CSUEB_VSA_OFFICERS@YAHOOGROUPS.COM your name and school to be on the guest list.
